Engineering and general contracting services for the replacement of a 62,000 SCFM Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) system
Project Duration: 10 Months
Below are some of the services we provided for this project:
An RTO system enables a plant to destroy the VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) produced in the chemical process before releasing exhaust gases to the atmosphere. These VOC’s may otherwise harm the environment if not destroyed by the RTO. A replacement of an RTO system is necessary when it is at the end of it’s lifespan. Nelson Baker provided turnkey EPC services which included foundations for a new RTO, supports for the stack and duct systems, ductwork and piping design, and installation of 600HP VFD-controlled Process Fans which, with the help of state of the art automation, improve efficiency and increase process excellence.
Imposing winter weather has been the main challenge with projects like an RTO replacement since mechanical construction is typically completed throughout the winter and spring seasons. Unforeseen storms are a difficult factor to work through as they create problems with not having some of the existing structure drawings. In our case, this requires a lot of field-verified dimensions. Civil/Structural Engineer, Ben Larson, recently recalled “I think everyone has done a great job providing important information early to make sure we are able to pour foundations prior to the cold weather.” Numerous comments have also been made by our client about the ease of operations and startups after shut-downs. Nelson Baker strives to streamline operations and maintain schedules throughout each project, all while facing challenges from mother nature.
